Coalition Troops Provide Aid for Injured Afghans

WASHINGTON, Aug. 23, 2011 – Coalition forces today administered first aid to injured Afghans and then transported them for further medical treatment following a Taliban attack that killed five civilians in the Nadir Shah district of Afghanistan’s Khowst province, military officials reported.

In Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- Afghan and coalition forces killed three insurgents and captured 10 others during multiple operations in Regional Command East.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several Haqqani insurgents during an operation in the Zurmat district of Paktiya province. The force was searching for a Haqqani network leader when it was attacked by several armed insurgents from a nearby compound. The force responded to the attack, killing the insurgents. The insurgents were armed with multiple grenades, AK-47 rifles, and 30 pounds of explosives.

-- In the Sangin district of Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition force detained several suspects during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader. The leader directs Taliban operations in Kotozay Village, and provides support and guidance to insurgents in the district.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition force detained a Taliban facilitator and several of his associates during a security operation in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province. The facilitator was responsible for transporting rockets and weapons from the Tarnak wa Jaldek district into the Daman district, and provided reports to senior Taliban leaders.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition force detained a Haqqani network leader and two suspects during a security search In the Khost district of Khost province. The captured leader was involved in roadside bomb and other attacks, and he also distributed insurgent weapons and supplies.

-- In Ghazni city in Ghazni province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader. The leader manages fighters, facilitates roadside bomb operations, and coordinates with other Taliban leaders and facilitators in the area.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition force detained several suspects while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator in the Jani Khel district of Paktiya province. The targeted facilitator participates in direct-action attacks and moves weapons and equipment to high-profile insurgent leaders in Khost province. The security force confiscated multiple rocket propelled grenades, mortar rounds and AK-47 rifles.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition force detained a Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin insurgent leader and two suspects during a security operation in the Nerkh district of Wardak province. The detained leader was responsible for planning and coordinating attacks, including roadside bombings, against Afghan security forces.
